The 'World of Tomorrow'
Extropia is an expression of the raygun gothic, or "raypunk" future. The cosmos is mankind's for the taking, and in dazzling cities, aboard space stations and on alien planets, sentient beings go about their fun and enlightened lives. It's a world in which the mighty atom powers the street lights, rockets stream across the galaxy with faster-than-light drives, and intrepid explorers take interstellar safari, aetheric rayguns in hand.
In short, Extropia is the future only online worlds can now afford us.
"A vista into world of wondrous ideas, signifying man's achievements... a step into the future, with predictions of constructive things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideals: the Atomic Age, the challenge of outer space, and the hope for a peaceful and unified world." ~ Walt Disney
Provisions
As a space upon the Second Life Grid, Extropia offers:
- an interactive experience,
- a 'hangout',
- and a home.
Its visitors come seeking adventure, find a welcoming community and may eventually choose to settle there. Extropia's layout in-world and the web presence to accompany it will:
- advertise a raypunk adventure,
- enable communities,
- and make it easy for future citizens to find land for rent.
Extropia's Visitors
Extropia appeals most broadly to science fiction fans. Its likeliest visitors are those seeking a world which is visually interesting, can offer them a like-minded community or which can otherwise entertain them for a time. It'll be a particular draw to those interested in a 'retrofuture'.
Extropia currently attracts futurists, with transhumanists a particularly vocal presence. Though not appealing to such crowds as directly as other H+ projects in Second Life or other online worlds, it will continue to seek relevance in its message of a bright and technology-enabled future.
The region carries a mature rating, reflecting a community of adult users who are free to express themselves within the mere bounds of common sense, with little other hindrance.
Look and Feel
A new visitor to Extropia will arrive to a world of bold and distinctive architecture drawn to raypunk and other, complimentary sci-fi styles. The buildings are tall, the seas clear, the signage clear and the layout convenient. Visitors should feel as though they are sweeping (on foot) or being swept (by public transport) through a clean environment, with their eyes occasionally drawn towards the skies.
Somebody who considers Extropia to be their home should feel comfortable, in the sense that getting to where they know they need to be should be made easy. They should be allowed to sit in a favoured spot, regard the world around them and see detail; be that something they've not noticed about the place before, or a feature they think they might like to show to somebody else.
The music played on regional plots should reflect a futuristic feel too, taking in electronic chillout, light techno and synthesiser music. The occasional tune contemporary to a 1930s & 40s crowd would also lend familiar accents to some older-looking buildings.
Resources
Extropia is currently a 3-sim region, comprising 196,608 sq.m of virtual space laid vertically.
Its 'human' resources include 4 directors and an as-yet untapped handful of eager volunteers from within its citizenry.
